La métallurgie du fer en Normandie et ses marges de l'âge du Fer au moyen-âge.

Abstract : This thesis work focuses on the interdisciplinary and diachronic study of metallurgical activities on the scale of a large western part of France, with the aim of studying the evolution of metallurgical activities from the Iron Ages to the Middle Ages. This research is largely based on the interdisciplinary study of these production wastes as privileged documents, in order to understand and reconstruct the different techniques implemented throughout the operating chains of the different eras, schematically: from mine to ore, from ore to metal, from metal to object. It is a question of "reading the material", of making a structural and analytical characterisation of it, making it possible to determine the technical gestures carried out by the craftsman and to deduce his skill, his competences, his specialities. It is also a question of trying to perceive the economic and social organisation underlying this activity, by identifying the locations of primary production (extraction and smelting) and metal processing (smithing), as well as their level of specialisation, while specifying the destination of the metal (local or non-local smithing, and exchange systems) and its recycling methods.A diachronic inventory was first carried out of the metallurgical sites discovered during preventive and sometimes programmed excavations carried out in the western regions. The description of the structures and their layout on the sites allows a better understanding of the organisation of the workshops and a closer look at how they function. Through the macroscopic study, the metallurgical furnishings were initially identified. Then archaeometric studies, by means of optical microscope analyses, were also carried out on these iron and steel remains allowing the internal characterisation of a representative sample by phase, context and period, coming from these different occupations.
